Schools and companies sign up for regional science fair

Schools and other organisations throughout the South East are signing up for the biggest regional science event in the UK – the 2018 Big Bang Fair South East.

Headline sponsor of this vibrant event packed with hundreds of interactive workshops and shows is Gatwick Airport.

“We’re pleased to be headline sponsor for the Big Bang Fair South East once again, especially as our sponsorship is enabling the event to take place across two days for the first time,” says Paula Aldridge, Gatwick Airport Community Engagement Manager.

“Our objective is to inform young people about the wide range of applications of STEM skills at the airport and to inspire them to choose STEM subjects – helping to build a pipeline of talent for the future.”

The event began in 2012 and was attended by fewer than 2,000 students. It is being held over two days, Wednesday and Thursday, 27th-28th June 2018, at the South of England Showground and is co-ordinated by STEM Sussex. Attendance is expected to top 2017’s record of 8,900 9-19-year-olds and their teachers.

“In my opinion it’s the most exciting and inspiring event in the STEM calendar,” says Estelle Whewell, STEM Sussex Acting Project Manager. “It’s a real privilege to work on it and I’m enjoying sourcing a wide range of workshops, shows and other activities that students will enjoy.”

The Big Bang Fair South East links employers, educational institutions and professional bodies with young people and their teachers at an event that highlights further education and career opportunities in STEM.

As well as a wide range of fun, noisy and exciting shows and hands-on activities, STEM Ambassadors and other industry representatives will be on hand to show young people what real science and engineering careers involve.

Since 2018 is the Year of Engineering, we look forward to celebrating and inspiring a record number of next-generation engineers.
