All the fun of the (science) fair at Crawley school

Crawley students will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the latest developments in science and technology at a special day-long event in their school later this month.

The third Big Bang @ Holy Trinity School, on 22nd March, will be a day of exciting and fun activities aimed at encouraging young people to undertake further studies and pursue career possibilities in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.

Teachers at the school organised their first ‘little’ Big Bang in 2015 following a visit to the Big Bang Fair South East, at the South of England Showground, the previous summer. According to a member of staff, the day of hands-on activities “gave students a clearer understanding of how the curriculum fits into the real world – and most of all it was fun!” Almost 90% of the Key Stage 3 students involved said they had “really enjoyed” the day.

Staff will be creating and running their own workshops, as well as inviting other organisations to provide activities. They will include STEM Sussex, from the University of Brighton, with their ‘egg drop challenge,’ Curiosity Hub with Lego robotics and the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s ‘energy watch’.

“The Big Bang is a chance to apply learning to a real-world context,” said teacher, Colleen Wells. “It has been brilliant to see the enthusiasm and energy the students have for the different challenges and workshops.

“We were so inspired by the Big Bang Fair South East that we wanted to try something ourselves. There is a lot our school and other schools can do to encourage students to engage with STEM subjects and the careers that are possible.

The 2017 Big Bang South East Fair, part of the nationwide Big Bang Near Me programme, takes place at the South of England Showground on 28th June, when 9,000 students and their teachers from across the region are expected to attend.

The culmination of the annual Crawley STEMfest, it is organised by STEM Sussex, the STEM outreach support department at the University of Brighton, in partnership with Crawley Borough Council and Central Sussex College. The headline sponsors are Gatwick Airport Limited.
