Event Date: Monitoring from May - September

Buzz Club

The Buzz Club is investigating semi-aquatic hoverflies and their use of home-made artificial rot holes in gardens and outdoor areas, so-called Hoverfly Lagoons. They’re asking schools to set up lagoons in their grounds and monitor them once a month between May and September.

The aim is to educate students about hoverflies as important pollinators, to show that part of their life cycle depends on these rot holes and to create important habitats to support them while collecting data on lagoon design.

Buzz Club’s resident lagoon expert Dr Ellie Rotheray is available to visit schools in East Sussex to introduce students to hoverfly larvae and help them create their lagoons. These are made from empty milk bottles and cost nothing, and it’s easy to get involved in the project.
